How to Promote Your Comic Book
October 27, 2020
Getting the word out about your indie comic book isn’t easy, especially if you don’t have a significant internet presence or following. Although it’s easier to promote your book once you have available printed copies, you can also start advertising and connecting with fellow comic book fans before you finish the first issue.
In the internet age, social media makes it easier than ever to promote your comic book. However, traditional outlets like bookstores and comic conventions are still viable options. Your best bet is to use a multi-faceted approach that can connect you with old and young fans alike, without neglecting your chances of reaching people who aren’t comic book fans yet.
Comic Cons
Promoting your book with a table at a comic, sci-fi, or fantasy convention is a great way to get the word out. You’ll be able to give potential fans instant gratification with a copy of your work immediately, instead of making them wait for shipping.
To make yourself as visible as possible, get a bright custom printed tablecloth and a vertical retractable banner stand. You will likely be competing with major comic industry publishers, so keep your art and name as large as possible to help establish your credibility and bring over curious fans.
Getting into Bookstores
Unfortunately, getting bookstores to stock your self-published comic book is harder than you might think. Most chain stores won’t even consider carrying a few copies of your comic book, even if you’re local and have a following.
However, smaller indie bookstores and regional chains may have a policy for selling self-published books on consignment. Although your book will be on the shelves, you’ll still be responsible for doing all promotional work and will have to split the proceeds with the bookstore. However, it’s an excellent way to get your work in front of local buyers, especially if you live in an area with many comic book fans.
Online Channels and Social Media
Social media remains one of the best places to spread the word about your projects. Although you can pay to promote your posts on these channels, simply posting regularly can help keep your fans engaged with your new works and spreading the word themselves.
Set up a Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter profile, at a minimum, and make sure to create genuine connections with other creators. Post links to their work or collaborate with them on illustrations. You may even meet your next long-term writer or artist this way.
Of course, it’s important not to overdo your promotional work. The best way to keep selling copies of your comic is to keep publishing new issues or start a new series. Promoting the same books repeatedly will become less effective over time as fans move on to more recent series.
Self-Publishing for Rookies and Veterans
There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to promoting a comic book. The best way to connect with fans may vary slightly depending on your target demographic and genre. However, as a general rule, promoting both online and in-person is the best strategy for reaching as many people as possible.
